Ma Kahat Act Passes, Bringing Progress to Long Overdue Simon Sanchez High School Rebuild Efforts

Hagåtña, Guam – The 37th Guam Legislature has passed Bill 94-37, also known as the Ma Kahat Act, allowing for the rebuilding and construction of Simon Sanchez High School (SSHS) to move forward with progress. The bill was introduced by Senator Roy Anthony Benavente Quinata, an alumnus of SSHS and cosponsored by all 15 members of the legislature. Senator Quinata expressed his sincere appreciation to the SSHS stakeholders and community at large for their support of the measure and participation during two public hearings.

The legislation incorporates many of the recommended amendments received during the public hearing and Senator Quinata extends his appreciation to his cosponsors as well as the members of the legislature who demonstrated their commitment to our school age children by passing this important bill. “I am thankful for all those who supported this effort," said Senator Quinata. "This is a victory for our students and a great example of how we can work together in partnership for positive change in our community."

Simon Sanchez High School is one of Guam’s oldest schools, having served thousands of students since its conversion to a high school in 1981. The school has gone without any major renovation or upgrade since then, making it one of Guam’s oldest learning facilities still in use. With the passing of this bill, plans can now move forward on renovating and upgrading SSHS so that it meets current educational standards.

The Ma Kahat Act includes provisions for modernizing classrooms by providing much needed repairs to existing buildings and infrastructure which have suffered from years of neglect due to limited funding resources. With these improvements in place, SSHS can continue its mission of providing quality education for generations to come.
