Free haircuts on Tuesday in Hagåt

By Thomas Benavente Pacific Daily News - June 26, 2023

Through the recovery from Typhoon Mawar, government officials have all had to step up and work the extra hours to find different ways to help the community.

One mentally relieving contribution arises from the offices of Sen. Dwayne San Nicolas and Sen. Roy Quinata as they are providing free haircuts and products for the community.

The first “Taking Hair and Combing Together for Relief” was a success on June 20, as more than 70 haircuts were performed just outside of the Inalåhan Mayor’s Office.

The free six-hour event was organized by the Office of Senator Dwayne T.D. San Nicolas and the Office of Senator Roy A.B. Quinata in partnership with Guam Community College’s Cosmetology Program.

“Often in difficult times like this, a simple act of kindness can lift people’s spirits,” said Janice Aguon, Lead Cosmetology Instructor for the Guam Community College. “For me and the students in our GCC Cosmetology class, cutting hair is our way of supporting people through the hardships we are all facing. We love to see the smiles on their faces and the beauty that opens up in them. At GCC, we like to say that community is our middle name. What better way to show it than to be out here meeting our neighbors and helping them get through this tough time.”

The partners will continue to provide free haircuts to Guam residents. The next “Taking Hair and Combing Together for Relief” is scheduled for Tuesday at the Hågat Mayor’s Office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last haircut will be performed at 2:30 p.m.

The Office of Senator Dwayne T.D. San Nicolas will be hosting a donation drive for Sanctuary Incorporated of Guam, a local nonprofit organization that helps families help themselves. The office will be accepting donations at the DNA Building ste. 407/408 on 238 Archbishop Flores Street in Hagåtna from June 26 to July 7.

Sanctuary lost food and experienced damage due to the devastation left by Typhoon Mawar. Sanctuary is in need of nonperishable products like canned food, water, and toiletries such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and toothpaste.

“We are working to support Sanctuary because it helps the youth and families help themselves,” said Sen. Dwayne San Nicolas. “I am in support of coming together especially during a time where we are vulnerable and in recovery from Mawar. I am always in support of groups and organizations helping the island community.”

Sanctuary exists to provide critical social services to youth and their families, which was established in 1971 as a juvenile justice system for runaway, homeless, neglected and abused youth.
