Early birds: 8 start formal bids for mayor, senator in first 3 days of candidacy filing

Eight made their mayoral and senatorial bids official after being the earliest to file their candidacy papers with the Guam Election for this year’s primary election.

GEC would still have to complete a review of their filings for ratification.

The commission started accepting candidacy papers on Feb. 26 and within three days, six mayoral and two senatorial candidates filed their papers, including nomination petitions.

Sånta Rita-Sumai, Malesso’

Just on the opening day of the 2024 candidacy filing, three who are vying to become Sånta Rita-Sumai mayor have already filed their documents with GEC, starting off with Hill Junior Leon Guerrero, a Democrat, who filed his candidacy at 8 a.m.

About half an hour later, JanaLu Lizama Salvador, a Republican, also filed papers with GEC.

Dale "Jr." C.P. Alvarez, the son of incumbent Sånta Rita-Sumai Mayor Dale Alvarez, also filed his candidacy with GEC as a Democrat. The incumbent mayor, who has so far served four terms for a total of 16 years, is not seeking re-election.

Michael Gumataotao, who wants to run for Hagåtña mayor as a Republican, filed his candidacy paper with GEC on Feb. 26.

Two potential Malesso’ Democrat mayoral candidates, Stephen M. Cruz and Franklin J.Q. Champaco also filed their candidacy papers on the first and second day, respectively.

Most of the 19 village mayors are seeking re-election this year.
